Koinonia Partners, one of the communities I am visiting soon, is similar to all intentional Christian communities in that they have various levels of commitment spelled out in their description. This is one of the most important decisions a community can make because people who are full members have decision making powers–unless the group is a cult. If the person is someone who causes a lot of conflicts because of lack of maturity, this can drain the community immensely.
Here is an example of various levels of connection and commitment that could be helpful to a person wanting to start an intentional community.
